Net Gain

August 24, 2006

Completing his fourth season as Baylor's head women's tennis coach, Joey Scrivano has coached his Bears through a record-setting season. The Bears claimed their third Big 12 regular-season title and their first-ever Big 12 post-season championship on their way to a quarterfinal NCAA appearance.
Overall, the netters earned a program-best 28-3 record and closed the spring ranked sixth nationally. Among the wins, the Bears swept eight of their opponents and did not lose a single match when they won the doubles point. On April 22, Baylor defeated Colorado in its final match of the regular season and claimed its third Big 12 championship having posted a perfect 11-0 conference record.
Days later Baylor hosted the conference's post-season championship and the Bears entered at the top seed. The post-season title had eluded the women's tennis team since joining the conference in 1997, but this year's team set a goal and promised nothing less. The netters received a bye in the first round before defeating Kansas and Nebraska in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds.
Baylor then went head-to-head with long-time foe Texas. The Bears had defeated the Longhorns in a marathon regular-season match earlier in April that came down to a 4-3 victory. The Big 12 championship final round gave Baylor another chance to scorch its rival as the Bears swept the match 4-0 and claimed the program's first-ever post-season Big 12 title.
Four individual Bears were recognized by the Big 12 for their regular-season conference records. Sophomore Zuzana Zemenova, for the second-consecutive year, topped the No. 1 singles with an 11-0 mark while junior Zuzana Cerna earned the best record, 10-0, at the No. 2 position. At the conference's No. 4 singles position, junior Klara Zrustova boasts the winningest record, 11-0, while Zuzana Krchnakova tops the No. 6 singles list with her 9-1 mark.
Among Baylor's records this spring, Cerna tallied the most singles wins in a season by winning 45 matches. Both Cerna and Zemenova were invited to the NCAA individual tournament and earned All-America status by being seeded in the singles bracket. Zemenova was the fourth seed and Cerna was seeded in the nine to 16 slot.
Baylor closed out the season with its best-ever post-season run in the NCAA tournament, advancing to the quarterfinals where fourth-seeded Florida handed the fifth-seeded Bears a heartbreaking 4-0 loss.
Looking forward to furthering the success of an already nationally recognized program, Baylor's women's tennis team always has the NCAA tournament in sight. And with the continuous achievements that have led the program to unprecedented heights, the goal for Baylor remains the same. "We want to win a national title, a team national title," Scrivano said.
