Gettermans Honored

In honor of their extensive service to Baylor, Ted and Sue Getterman received the University's Founders Day Medal at a ceremony attended by fellow alumni and friends on Jan. 31. Considered Baylor's highest honor, the medal is given to those who have made significant contributions to the life and future of the University. 

"Like the founders of Baylor, the Gettermans have been involved in almost every aspect of the University," said Richard Scott, vice president for development. "Their greatest love is providing scholarships for students, and beyond that, they've had an interest in music, athletics and many other areas."

Getterman, BBA '49, JD '51, is a former mayor of Waco, was president of the Seven-Up Company in Waco, Bryan and Austin and served as president of the Texas Bottlers Association. In 1998, he was named Distinguished Alumnus of the Hankamer School of Business. Getterman, who met his wife at a pre-law party at Baylor, serves on the boards of several Waco institutions including Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center.

Sue Getterman, BA '50, is a former president of the Junior League of Waco and has served on many civic boards, including the United Way. She was elected to Baylor's Board of Regents in 2002 and serves on the Committee on Regents and the University Relations Committee. 

The Gettermans have endowed scholarships in the Schools of Music, Business and Education, the Athletic Department and George W. Truett Theological Seminary. Getterman Softball Stadium is dedicated to the couple in honor of their significant lead gift -- the largest single contribution ever to Baylor women's athletics. They also have supported the University through the Presidents Club and Athletic Directors Club and regularly provide resources for numerous campus facilities. They have received many awards for their involvement with Baylor and the community.
