Comma-tized

September 30, 2005

Confused by commas? Stymied by semi-colons? Have no fear. Lynne Truss, author of the best-selling book Eats, Shoots and Leaves: A Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation, will deliver the fourth annual Ferguson-Clark Author Series lecture at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 3 at Waco Hall.

Truss, a former television critic, literary editor and sports columnist for The Times of London, also has written several novels and radio plays but is known chiefly for her comedic take on grammar gaffes in her surprising best- seller, which has sold more than 2 million copies worldwide.

"For any true stickler, you see, the sight of the plural word 'Book's' with an apostrophe in it will trigger a ghastly private emotional process similar to the stages of bereavement, though greatly accelerated," Truss writes in the Eats introduction.

"Lynne Truss is humorous and fun on a subject that can be dry. I thought, 'Let's have her humor and charm captivate the audience,'" said John Wilson, associate professor and director of library advancement and special projects.

The Ferguson-Clark Author Series was established by Collen A. Clark, BBA '86, JD '90, in honor of his mother, Carla Sue Ferguson Garrett, BA '58, a member of the Baylor libraries' Board of Advisers.
