Poet Fagels at Beall-Russell

Award-winning translator and poet Robert Fagels, the emeritus Arthur W. Marks Professor of Comparative Literature at Princeton University, will deliver the Beall-Russell Lectures in the Humanities at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 11.
"An Afternoon's Odyssey with Robert Fagels" is free and open to the public. It will be held in the Jones Theater at Baylor's Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Center.
Fagels has received numerous awards for his translations including the 1997 PEN/Ralph Manheim Medal for Translation and an Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1996. His translation of Homer's Odyssey was voted one of the 10 "Best Books of 1996" by Time magazine. Fagels has contributed to many journals and reviews and also has produced a book of original poetry titled I, Vincent: Poems from the Pictures of Van Gogh.
The Beall-Russell Lectures were established in 1982 by Virginia B. Ball, BA '40, in honor of her mother, Mrs. John A. Beall and Lily Russell, both of the class of 1910, former dean of women at Baylor. Ball subsequently funded the establishment of the Beall Poetry Festival in 1993 to encourage contemporary poetry. 
Past Beall-Russell lecturers have included poet Maya Angelou, journalist Bill Moyers and Nobel Prize winner for literature Czeslaw Milosz.
