Longs Honored With Founders Day Medal

February 12, 2004

Baylor alumni and friends honored William Bowman Long and his wife, Mary Cole Farrow Long, Jan. 26 with the University's Founders Day Medal. One of the institution's highest honors, the medal is given to those who have made significant contributions to the life and future of Baylor.
"In choosing the Founders Day Medal recipients, we look for people who, over their lifetime, have been strong supporters of Baylor," said Richard Scott, vice president for development. "The Longs have been lifetime supporters and take a general interest in every part of the University."
Long attended Baylor University from 1939-42 and graduated from the Baylor College of Dentistry in 1945. He earned an MD from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in 1951. He is a member of several well-known medical societies and civic associations and is a deacon at First Baptist Church of Belton, Texas. The Longs are members of the Heritage Club of the Baylor Alumni Association and were co-presidents from 1999-2000. They both have served on the University Development Council since 1991. Long was a member of the Baylor Board of Regents from 1991-2000 and was president of the BAA Central Texas Chapter for two years.
Mary Long received bachelor's and master's degrees from Baylor in 1944 and 1965, respectively. She taught English at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor for 18 years and has written four books about genealogy. She and her husband also completed a history of the NoZe Brotherhood, Baylor's infamous student parody group. In 1994, she was named Distinguished Baylor Woman by the BAA Central Texas Chapter, and the Longs also received the association's First Family Award for the Cole, Boone and Long families.
