In Memory - William Gardner Gateley

Baylor professor emeritus William Gardner Gateley, 73, died May 6, 2003. Born in Cedar Grove, Tenn., in 1929, he completed his undergraduate studies at David Lipscomb College in Nashville, Tenn., earned his master's degree at the University of Tennessee and doctoral degree from Ohio University. Dr. Gateley, who came to Baylor in 1965, served as chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders for most of his 38 years at the University. 
Dr. Kathy Whipple, current department chair, said Dr. Gateley was her chair for 11 years. "During that time, he was a mentor, personal counselor, adviser and friend. The department will miss his smiling face," she said.
Additionally, Dr. Gateley served as president of the Texas Speech and Hearing Association and was a nationally recognized expert on the topic of fluency disorders.
An elder and longtime member of Central Christian Church in Waco, Dr. Gateley is survived by his wife, Margaret Gateley; son, Monty Gateley; grandsons, Marshall and Derek; and sister, Patty Adcock, of Lexington, Tenn.
