When new Baylor head football coach Guy Morriss says he plans to take the Bears for a "positive ride" this fall, he's not just talking in terms of football success.
There's nothing the Bears' new head man would rather do after a long workout or close game than get out his beloved motorcycle and cruise the roads of Central Texas.
"It's just something I've always done," Morriss said of his bike riding. "I can remember my grandfather had one when I was growing up, and I started riding then. I couldn't afford my own until I started playing professional football, but I've always loved to be out alone on the road."
He's owned both Harley-Davidsons and Yamahas -- his current choice -- and said in his 20-plus years of riding he's never had a serious fall or injury. His wife, Jackie, often accompanies him, the two sometimes traveling up to 200 miles a day. "I can ride hours on the back roads of Central Texas and never see another car," he said.
The former NFL center who played in two Super Bowls said golf, tennis and fishing never interested him. Riding his bike is another matter, though. "It's just my chance to get away, to feel the breeze and see the scenery," he said. "I don't think about football or anything else, just get away from everything, and when I come back, I'm refreshed."
