The Sunday After

In the days following September 11, heroic efforts were undertaken by emergency personnel throughout the nation: firefighters, police officers, emergency medical technicians, physicians, nurses ... the list goes on and on. While they rushed to tend to the physical realities of the nightmare that had exploded around us, another group was called upon to address the spiritual needs of a nation stunned, hurting and angry.
Attendance in places of worship across the United States climbed on the following Sunday. Clergymen and women tore themselves from the onslaught of 24-hour news to return to their offices and prepare what may well have been the most difficult sermon they've ever delivered.
