Inside 'Inside Baylor Sports'

September 10, 2002

As one of a new generation of television programs that highlights collegiate sports, the award-winning "Inside Baylor Sports" is more than just another coaches' show.
"It's more of a magazine-style format than what you normally see in a coaches' show," said Michael Butler, the show's senior producer. "It's not a lot of talking heads; most of what you see is people playing sports."
In its debut four years ago, the weekly "Inside Baylor Sports" took a fresh approach to standard college athletic programming instead of focusing only on football and basketball with coaches' interviews, said Kliff Kuehl, the show's co-executive producer and general manager of KWBU-TV & FM.
"The format certainly provides more coverage for the so-called minor sports because it allows you, over the course of a season, to cover everything," he said.
Butler said the show's format is unique in that regard. "I don't think there's another school that does as comprehensive a job as Baylor on covering every sport," he said.
In addition to showing highlights and results from almost every Baylor athletic event during the week, the program profiles athletes for their noteworthy accomplishments both on and off the field.
"'Inside Baylor Sports' covers Baylor athletics better because the coaches give us access to everything," said John Morris, Baylor's director of broadcasting and co-host of the show. "The teams often take cameras on the road with them to show fans what they normally wouldn't be able to see."
Morris and Lori Scott Fogleman, Baylor director of media relations, co-host the show from a different location each week, showcasing the University's athletic facilities as well as other parts of the campus. Butler and fellow producer Ryan Hendricks do the majority of the production work, from the initial filming to the final editing, under the umbrella of KWBU-TV/Big Bear Productions. In its short history, the program has won two Telly Awards, which recognize quality in non-network video productions.
"John and Lori in front of the cameras and Ryan and Michael behind them make a great team," Kuehl said. "Everyone who sees the show is amazed by its quality."
